NextPort is a strategic initiative by Portsur Castellón to transform the port terminal into a sustainable and smart benchmark. It combines digitalization through digital twins and AI with the electrification of port infrastructure powered by renewable energy.
NextPort's strategy is divided into three pillars: renewable energy generation, electrification of docks and machinery, and a digital platform for operational and predictive management, with data-driven decision making.
Traditional ports rely heavily on fossil fuels (cranes, machinery, ships), generating significant emissions. Furthermore, port operations are complex and lack a comprehensive, real-time overview for optimizing resources and planning efficiently.
Installation of a 900 kW photovoltaic plant on the south dock to generate local green energy.
Electrification of the dock to allow ships to connect to the electrical grid during their stay.
Development of a digital platform with digital twin and AI: NextPort Digital integrates data from processes, cranes, warehouses, lighting, environmental sensors, and enables real-time monitoring, simulations and prescriptive recommendations.
Use of predictive analytics to optimize operational decisions, reduce costs, improve energy efficiency and minimize polluting emissions.
The first results of the electrification are expected in 2026, with the final commissioning of the electrified dock.
With the local generation of renewable energy, it is expected to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of port operations.
The digital platform is already in place, with predictive models that help in operational and strategic decision-making, which improves the sustainability and competitiveness of the terminal.
Furthermore, the project has institutional backing: it has been financed by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
