MIDAS (Comprehensive Improvement in the Distribution, Analysis, and Monetization of High-Value Environmental Data) is a pioneering initiative driving the digital transformation of the entire water cycle. Its goal is to create a Data Space that facilitates the secure and efficient exchange of information among companies, public administrations, and research and technology centers. Thanks to this ecosystem, it is possible to apply advanced analyses that optimize resource management, improve efficiency, reduce costs, and strengthen sustainability.
The developed digital platform is interoperable and allows for the integration of data from SCADA, PLC, IoT, and sensor systems. Based on this, it is possible to implement machine learning, artificial intelligence, and Big Data services that enable innovative tools such as early leak detection, demand forecasting, and water usage optimization with a comprehensive and integrated view. This system not only improves the operational efficiency of water management companies but also transforms how decisions are made, adding intelligence and value to every piece of data.
Those managing the integrated water cycle face a dual challenge: on the one hand, increasing pressure on water resources due to scarcity, climate change, and the need to guarantee a secure supply; on the other, the massive generation of heterogeneous data at all stages of the cycle—collection, distribution, treatment, and reuse—which increases the complexity of its analysis. The challenge lies in avoiding the disorganized accumulation of information and, at the same time, transforming that data into useful knowledge to optimize processes, comply with environmental regulations, and move toward sustainable and circular economy models.
MIDAS offers a comprehensive solution based on a five-layer architecture—data acquisition, knowledge generation, interoperability, support, and services—capable of integrating diverse data from IoT sensors, SCADA systems, and PLCs into a governed Data Space. In addition to guaranteeing data quality, security, and sovereignty, it incorporates interconnection mechanisms, advanced analytics tools, and strategies for monetization and fair valuation in the data economy. This enables the implementation of solutions to specific problems—such as network leaks, nighttime consumption analysis, and user demand forecasting—and fosters collaboration among businesses, government agencies, and technology centers, promoting sustainability and the circular economy.
